Electric vehicles: Are they the future of motoring?

Electric vehicles have already entered our lives and everything shows that they are the future of motoring.

Provided electric vehicles we mean vehicles that for their movement use an electric motor that takes energy from rechargeable batteries. In contrast, internal combustion vehicles burn some fuel for their movement, usually gasoline or diesel. The presence of electric cars has already been felt. Although the percentage of sales of new electric vehicles is still small, everything shows that their sales path will be upward and in the future they will star. According to research firm BloombergNEF, by 2049 70% of passenger cars will be electric or zero-emission, such as  fuel cell vehicles (Fuel Cells).

Many European countries are slowly putting the brakes on sales of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles until 2035. In Norway already more than 50% of new vehicle sales are electric. In addition, one by one the car manufacturers are announcing that they are moving towards the abolition of internal combustion vehicles. BMW for example  announced that by 2030, 50% of its sales will be electric vehicles. Renault has announced that 90% of its vehicles will be fully electric by 2030 while Opel will be fully electric in Europe by 2028!

Advantages

The advantages of electric vehicles are significant both individually and collectively. In more detail:

  • It is zero pollution. Something very important for the protection of the environment if we take for granted that vehicle exhaust gases are the main cause of pollution in cities.
  • They make less noise so they help reduce noise pollution. This makes them ideal for use in urban areas, where noise reduction is important to improve the quality of life of residents.
  • They are easier to use and friendlier to drive.
  • They are more economical in traffic (we save up to around 4.000 euros a year!) and their maintenance.

Disadvantages

This new trend in the field of motoring also has its problems. Electric vehicles have the following disadvantages:

  • They have a high selling price. One solution, of course, is subsidy programs  as in Greece the «I move electrically», where you can save up to 8.000 euros. In the future, however, a drop in the price of electric vehicles is predicted.
  • They have little autonomy. Difficult to cover long distances without stopping to charge. Also charging electric cars can take several hours, depending on the size of the battery and the type of charger.
  • Charging stations are required. At present, the networks of most countries are not sufficient. In our country, according to  (ACEA), in 2020 we had only 252 public charging points (lowest position in Europe). In the near future, however, this number is expected to multiply.

In total, the electric cars they represent a major challenge for the automotive industry, but also a great opportunity for the development of a more sustainable and eco-efficient mobility. Despite the advantages of electric cars, such as reducing emissions and saving fuel, there are still challenges to be addressed, such as the development of charging infrastructure and the improvement of battery life. Nevertheless, the increasing production and demand for electric vehicles has already led to significant progress and innovation in the field. It is certain that these developments will continue and will lead to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future movement.
