Automotive meets 5G technology
5G technology promises to fundamentally change the way cars and transportation operate globally. With its ultra-high speed and low latency, 5G enables the creation of a fully connected ecosystem of vehicles, infrastructure and people. This revolution is expected to improve safety, reduce accidents and make travel more efficient and sustainable.
One of the key areas where 5G can bring about change is autonomous vehicles. The technology enables direct communication between cars (vehicle-to-vehicle, V2V) and between vehicles and infrastructure (vehicle-to-infrastructure, V2I). This means that cars can “talk” to each other, warning of potential hazards, accidents or traffic jams. In this way, autonomous vehicles will operate more efficiently, minimizing human error, which is responsible for the majority of road accidents.
As the creation of smart cities draws closer, 5G is enhancing their operation, creating an interconnected ecosystem where cars, traffic lights and sensors will work together to improve traffic flow. For example, data from connected vehicles can be used to adjust traffic lights, reducing congestion and saving fuel.
In Greece, the development of 5G technology is still in its early stages, but pilot programs are already being implemented regarding its use in transportation. In large cities, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, the integration of 5G systems is being considered for traffic management and improving road safety. Despite the challenges, the implementation of 5G in the Greek market has great potential, as it can support the spread of connected vehicles and the implementation of smart solutions in transportation. The future looks optimistic, with 5G shaping the landscape of automotive mobility both in Greece and in the world.
