Honda and Nissan have announced a historic merger that aims to reshape the automotive industry, focusing on electrification and sustainable mobility. The deal, expected to close by 2026, aims to reshape the way cars are produced, distributed and adopted globally. With competition increasing, the two companies began negotiations in December 2024 to strengthen their global position, leveraging their expertise in electric and hybrid vehicles.
With competition from companies like Tesla, the Toyota and China's BYD to grow, the two companies are looking to strengthen their presence in the electric and hybrid car market. Honda plans to leverage Nissan's experience in electric vehicles, while Nissan looks forward to expanding product lines and leveraging Honda's expertise in new platforms and cutting-edge technologies.

However, despite initial ambitions, the merger between Honda and Nissan will not proceed, as negotiations collapsed due to disagreements over the structure of the deal. While the initial proposal envisaged an equal partnership, Honda sought to gain control of Nissan, which the latter found unacceptable. Nissan's decision to reject the deal marks the end of an ambitious attempt to create a joint giant in the automotive industry, leaving open the possibility of future cooperation in specific areas, such as the development of electric vehicles.
