The new Road Traffic Code (KOK) in Greece is expected to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The main changes it introduces include tougher fines for road safety-related offences, such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and the use of a mobile phone while driving.

According to the announcements of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the fines for certain serious violations are as follows:

  • Red light violation: The fine amounts to 700 euros.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: Fines range from 200 to 2.000 euros, depending on the driver's blood alcohol content.
  • Using a mobile phone without a hands-free system: The fine is 100 euros.
  • Not wearing a seat belt or helmet: The fine amounts to 350 euros.
  • Illegal use of Emergency Lane (LEA): The fine is 200 euros.
  • Illegal parking on disabled ramps: The fine amounts to 150 euros.

Also, the new KOK provides for fines for pedestrians who delay or obstruct traffic on the sidewalks, strengthening the responsibility of all road users. Pedestrian violations are considered equally important as they can affect traffic, safety and the smooth functioning of the road system.

Let us hope that Greece will take a step towards a new era of road safety, with the aim of reducing accidents, improving the quality of life and sustainable development. All together, citizens, institutions and industry, we can contribute to shaping a safer future on our roads.
